How it Started:
It started with me and my fellow classmates wanting to work together on a project right after graduation. We had just graduated on April 23rd and we saw this game jam called Little Guy Game Jam #6 coming up. We decided to give our hand at our first game jam as a group since we were just coming off a hard term 6 to keep the momentum going. This would be the first game jam I would be a Project Manager of an actual team. and many of my teammates’ first game jams as well. So we signed up for the game jam that same day after graduation.
What Went Well:
A lot went well, especially at the beginning phases. We came up with our roles pretty quickly based on what skills people wanted to end up showcasing through this project. The first meeting on April 24th, when the Weather theme was announced for the game project also went spectacularly. We found a clear vision pretty quickly, communication and bouncing ideas off each other went really well. We also onboarded Raine and Diego to do music very quickly as well to. slot in people who could fill in the things we couldn’t do. Over the course of the project, communication went well, we had daily meetings with as many members as possible (a clarification on this is in the next section).
What Went Wrong:
The first thing would be the schedules. The first two days I would be with family still so I would have to work late at night to pull my share of the workload. Kenny would have to pack and leave the last two days of the jam. This would mean roles would have to shift towards the middle & end. I had to drop most of the project management work, and instead do most of the coding while also doing the level design as well while Xavier would have to swap from main programmer to our main artist towards the end. On top of that, burn out from the sheer amount of work it took for us to get through the school year and finish out our final projects would finally catch up to us. This would lead to very poor quality of work on individual and group standards. That would further demotivate and stress me, Kenny and Xavier out even further.
